Elk are very social animals. They travel and live in herds that change throughout the year.
Most of the year the cows and the calves live in their own heards. The herds are around 40-52 elk in each herd but the more the better so they can be more safe.
In the Summer time the Bulls travel and live in small groups with other bulls, about 15 at the most.
In the early fall, the bulls begin whats called the rut. The rut is the yearly mating season for elk, it starts about August and ends in late October. The bulls fight each other to decide who gets to be the leader of the herd.
