Before European settlement, more than 10 million elk roamed all over the United States and in some parts of Canada. Today over 1 million Elk live in these United States, Utah, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina, and in some parts of Canada.
Rocky mountain elk are very adaptable when it comes to habitat. Elk live in a wide variety of habitats,from alpine meadows to rainforests and cold desert shrubland and sagebrush. Elk can live just about anywhere.
